How grading works

Grading you can trust

Novamind marks your practice tests to NCEA standards. Here’s exactly how that works — and what we do to keep it fair when the AI isn’t certain.

Graded to the NCEA standard

Every practice test is marked against the same Achieved / Merit / Excellence criteria as the real Achievement Standard, with feedback on each answer so you know exactly why you got the marks you did.

Your grade comes from the level of evidence, not a percentage

Each question is set at Achieved, Merit or Excellence level. You get Achieved by earning at least 60% of the Achieved-level marks; Merit needs that plus 60% of the Merit-level marks; Excellence needs Merit plus 60% of the Excellence-level marks. That is how NCEA works: a high total built from easy questions is not Excellence, and your results page shows the marks at each level so you can see exactly which bar you cleared.

Multiple-choice is graded exactly

Multiple-choice questions are checked against the correct option directly — no AI involved, so they’re always right. The AI only grades written answers, where judgement is needed.

If the AI isn’t sure, it never guesses your score down

Once in a while the AI can’t produce a confident grade for a written answer. When that happens we mark that question “pending review” and leave it out of your score entirely — a hiccup never lowers a mark you actually earned. Your grade is always decided from the questions that were properly graded.

Think a grade is wrong? Flag it

On your results, every written answer has a “flag for review” link. One tap sends that grade to us to check. We’d rather you tell us than quietly lose trust in the mark.

Practice tests are for learning, not official results. NCEA grades are awarded only by NZQA through your school — Novamind helps you get ready for them.
